The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
