A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
