Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
