A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
